Eating Disorders

Understanding Eating Disorders.

An eating disorder may seem straightforward at first glance, with questions like "why can't I just eat" or "why can't I stop eating" coming to mind. An eating disorder extends beyond food; fundamentally, it is not about food itself. Instead, it represents a mental and emotional struggle rooted in underlying issues, using food, weight, and other behaviors as maladaptive coping mechanisms. In my practice, I concentrate on addressing the underlying causes of the eating disorder in order to alleviate its symptoms. Throughout the therapy process, my focus is on reducing behaviors, while introducing healthy coping strategies, awareness, and emotional processing.

Achieving a life beyond the grasp of an eating disorder requires intentional effort, compassion, and a readiness to embrace the discomfort that comes with transitioning to a healthier state.

Emotional pain cannot kill you but running from it can. Allow. Embrace it. Let yourself feel. Let yourself heal.

Signs of an Eating Disorder.

Eating disorders can look different for everyone but common symptoms are:

  • food guilt

  • body checking

  • mood dependent on physical appearance

  • rigid patterns and thoughts about food

  • self-induced vomiting after meals

  • excessive exercise and dieting

  • occupied with body weight

  • extreme control, or loss of control with food and behaviors

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, rest assured that healing is possible.
